This luxurious vacation starts with airport pickup and a chauffeured transfer to check-in to CasaFuster, a 5-star grand luxury hotel in the fashionable Eixample district of Barcelona. Architecture buffs will like its beautiful castle-like facade which was designed by renowned Barcelona-born architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. It provides a world class combination of modern luxurious accommodations and old-world European charm, while boasting superb panoramic views of downtown Barcelona. It is this amazing balance that enticed director Woody Allen. In the movie, Vicky has tea with her aunt at the hotel's Cafe Viennese, and Allen himself has also been known to play the clarinet here with his band, whenever he is visiting Barcelona.
A fruit and chocolate basket will be waiting in your room to welcome you to Spain. We recommend dinner tonight in one of the hotel’s restaurants, which have received rave reviews. The night provides the opportunity to get acquainted with your hotel and to venture out into the city, if you wish!
This morning you will meet your guide for a visit to Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, the principal location of the movie. You will start with La Rambla, the 1.2km tree-lined pedestrian walkway and most iconic street in Barcelona. And because of this, there is no surprise that Allen also filmed Johanssen taking in the sights along this walkway. Vicky and Dough also stop there; while he happily admires canaries at La Rambla dels Ocells, translating to avenue of the birds, she succumbs to temptation and agrees to meet with Juan Antonio.
After La Rambla, you will meet your personal chef and head together to La Boqueria, Spain’s most important and lively market place offering the freshest produce and variety from all around Europe. At the market, you will visit the famous bar where in-the-know celebrities of Barcelona frequent. Your chef will show you around and will answer any questions you have about the array of products you see before you-crawling lobsters and other local seafood delicacies, tongue-charring peppers, two-foot lengths of chorizo sausage, horse steak and olives by the barrel will stoke your appetite and slow your feet, forcing you to linger at each booth. You and your chef will choose the freshest and finest ingredients for the traditional Spanish dishes, which are Bardem’s favorites!
Next you will have a gourmet cooking lesson where you will enjoy both the chef’s personalized attention and an authentic and sumptuous Spanish lunch.
Surely after this morning of activity you will welcome the Spanish siesta time and relish a free evening on your own. We suggest you to go to Tibidabo Amusement Park. The girls headed here for an afternoon of fun, and it may be a little out of the way from the city center, but it is more than 100 years old, and is one of Europe's most well-known amusement parks, offering stunning views of Barcelona. How about tasting some candy floss, like Juan Antonio's girlfriends!
Today our chauffeur will take you to Parc Güell, yet another Unesco World Heritage Site by Gaudi. In the film, Vicky bumps into Juan Antonio here. Modeled after English parks, Parc Guell was meant to be a housing estate for the rich, but was commercially unsuccessful. The Guell family donated it to the city in 1922. A colorful mosaic lizard, which is a popular photo spot (obviously, also present in Allen’s movie) leads to a hall with 100 palm-shaped pillars which was meant to be a market hall. We will head to the top of the park, marked by three crosses, for a panoramic view of the city.
For lunch you are booked at the same restaurant Vicky, Cristina and Juan Antonio chose for their terrace dinner -
Can Travi Nou . The romantic stone 17th century masia (Catalan farmhouse), is picturesque and a quiet enclave with an authentically rustic, yet still chic atmosphere.
After a siesta in your hotel, it is just the perfect time to finish your Gaudi route at La Pedrera . Be sure to climb to the roof terrace where there are several alien-like structures. Known as scare-witches, these are Gaudi-designed chimney stacks. With no straight lines in La Pedrera, its wavy facade appears as though Gaudi was sitting at the bottom of the sea when he designed it.
Just as Vicky and Cristina did in the movie, we welcome you to watch the sunset from the terrace and bring your camera! The evening is yours and we suggest popping into the glamorous boutiques on Passeig de Gracia, the Catalan “Rodeo Drive" that is featured quite a few times in the movie!
Today you will discover the Raval and Born districts. Not all that long ago, Raval—named for an Arabic word meaning "that which is on the outside"—was a haven for heroin dealers and prostitutes, much like the ones Cristina photographs on her strolls here with Juan Antonio. Barcelona bohos flock here for meals or discover the joy of El Raval — where things change from one street to the next, even one doorway to the next. But edge is also giving way to gentrification, to a gallery district whose nexus is MACBA , Barcelona's contemporary art museum, as well as scrappy spaces that share rent with hair salons, record stores and fashion designers.
For lunch you are booked at the best wine tasting venue and delicatessen shop in Barcelona, where our expert will tell you the secrets of the best Iberian ham and the finest Riojas’s and Priorat’s, among others. Bardem himself, on breaks from shooting sultry sex scenes with his leading ladies, hung out in El Born, where he rented an apartment during the six weeks of filming Vicky Christina Barcelona.
For your farewell night, we suggest another of the movie’s favorite’s venues, the restaurant Els Quatre Gats . A Barcelona legend since 1897, Els Quatre Gats ("The Four Cats" Catalan slang for "just a few people") was a favorite of Picasso who hung his work here and also designed a menu. On a narrow cobblestone street in the Barri Gòtic, this fin de siècle cafe has been the setting for poetry readings, piano concerts and painting expositions. In fact, Picasso’s very first exposition was held there! It was a base for members of the modernista movement and figured in the city's intellectual and bohemian life. After dinner, follow the steps of Christina and Juan Antonio in joining the local revelers at Bar Marsella in the tail-end of Barcelona's red-light district. For five generations, it has been the home of the "green fairy" absinthe. Made with nutmeg, juniper, fennel and anise, and blended with a touch of wormwood, it is an incredibly strong brew that tastes a bit like licorice or ouzo.
Your tour concludes with a lovely breakfast at the hotel, followed by a chauffeured transfer to Barcelona for your departure. Thank you for joining us for this unforgettable experience!
