Day 1top

Your Private Self/Drive Mushroom Hunting tour commences when you collect your hire car at Barcelona Airport/hotel/train station. You will then drive to a lovely village in the Alt Bergueda area in Catalonia, where you will be staying in a small delightful 19th century family home which has been converted recently into an hotel. The house is decorated with the original furniture from the 19th century and is typical of the area. Laura, who will be your host at the hotel, is the owners daughter and a young, vibrant person with tremendous enthusiasm for the hotel, the cooking classes, mushroom hunting, etc.

The house is set in the country - on one side are cows, the other horses - it is a truly rural area with view to the hills and mountains. Take some time to settle in and get to know your surroundings. Dinner tonight will be at your cosy masia, surely you will enjoy the fresh local produce used throughout the preparation of your meal. Tomorrow morning you will be "early to rise" for the morning´s mushroom hunting!

Day 2top

This morning you will be up early and after breakfast, waiting for you will be a specialist guide for your mushroom hunting forray. Without delay you will leave together for the forrested areas, the dew lying heavily on the ground; your guide leading you to all the very secret areas in which he knows will be found the best of the wild mushrooms. Continuing your day you will leave for a local authentic bar/restaurant where you will enjoy a sumptuous brunch served on a wooden platter laden with local meats, sausage, cheese and the infamous pan con tomate (Catalan Tomato bread), served with a Porron of wine (typical Catalan wine decanter with spout for pouring directly into the mouth!) This is country style eating - you may have a local workers sitting at your next table or an old grandfather sipping a small dark coffee - this is not "A la mode", it is down to earth! Later, you might wish to explore the area further. Laura will be pleased to assist you and you could maybe visit a local catalan donkey farm. In the immediate area there is a charmiing family of farmers who care for birds and owls and it would be well worth your while to pop in. Don't forget to have a relaxing siesta at your hotel prior to dinner tonight at a very highly regarded Michelin starred restaurant five minutes drive from your hotel. The restaurant serves delicious food made with the fresh produce from its garden and you will enjoy a tasting menu with wine.

Day 3top

We hope you slept like a baby last night because this morning you will again need to rise like a lark - your guide will be waiting for you to hunt out more mushrooms and explain the different types of "boletus" to you, including those that you may not eat! Afterwards you will enjoy a delicious and full brunch in a local restaurant which specialises in "breakfast for mushroom hunters".

Your day continues with visit to a local market which specialise in the sale of all different types of wild mushroom. You will surely be amazed at all the varieties available - a veritable treasure trove of up to 100 different types of mushroom.These mushroom market - smal, but well assorted in season - is the most important in Catalunya and operate only during the months of September, October and November. During this season they are full of mushroom hunters and mushrooms to hunt! If you are interested, depending on the days of your tour you could participate in some of the mushroom related activities in the market, for example, a workshop for drying and preserving mushrooms.

After rising so early and having such a busy morning you will be ready for a rest prior to a very special cooking class at your hotel, with the emphasis on dishes made with mushrooms.

Your dinner tonight will be a sumptious meal with wine at your hotel, including some of the dishes you have learned to make during your lesson.

Day 4 top

Your tour is over, after a hearty breakfast at your hotel you will drive to Barcelona and return your car at the airport/in the town.
