A Taste of Catalonia Tour: Food, Wine & Medieval Villages
The morning of your one-day foray into Catalonia starts with a chauffeured transfer from Barcelona to the wonderful, amphitheatre-like wine region of Emporda overlooking the Mediterranean sea, the Tuscany of Spain. Joining your guide you will make a complete visit to a small winery on a beautiful old estate belonging to one of the grand old Catalan families. In the year 2000, the family decided to plant new vines there in order to be able to produce prestigious wines of high quality. Recently, the vineyards have reached a maturity sufficient to make the concentration of fruit to produce really good wines. The prestigious Peñin Spanish wine guide for 2010 confirms that they are on the right track, with a red wine from 2008 receiving 93 points and 92 points for white - no other red or white wine from the D.O. Empordà scored higher. Following your visit you will have an opportunity to taste the fine wines in company of the in-house expert.
Continuing your day you will drive a short way to the exquisite walled medieval village of Peretalada where you will have an opportunity to wander around the tiny cobbled streets and perhaps take time for a coffee in one of the many cafes in the centre. Your guide will most certainly have many anecdotes to relate about this very special place.
You will now move on to Ullastret, a tiny, authentic, quiet medieval village. Here you will visit Nuri - a charming local lady elaborating wonderful goats cheeses and bi-products. You will surely enjoy a tasting of her famous recuit (fresh cheese) with honey, amongst others.
Your "medieval journey" continues to another close ( and of course medieval!) village, where you will enjoy a lunch of delicious local Catalan country fare in a typical old-style restaurant. Relax with a glass of Emporda wine and maybe have a glance at the local rural museum, attached to the restaurant, to further experience the Catalan medieval way of life.
Your final visit of the day will be to Calella de Palafrugell, the most chic of the coastal towns in the Costa Brava, with breathtaking views of the azul blue Mediterranean; beachfront cafés to enjoy a coffee and pastry and inviting walkways. Take a walk on the scenic seaside path and breath in the fresh air whilst you gaze far out to sea, the sun sparkling on the small crested waves.
After a day of medieval exploration, a delicious luncheon and a breath of sea air, you can now sit back in your comfortable car whilst you are driven back to Barcelona. We do hope you will join us for this memorable day.
