Jewish Heritage Day Tour of Seville

Jewish Heritage Day Tour of Seville

Our Officially Licensed Guide will meet you this morning and you will head off for a sightseeing tour of the Barrio Santacruz, which is the old Jewish quarter. It is a real joy to amble around its narrow streets and beautiful squares. The streets are narrow and form a labyrinth, where it is easy to get lost. This is part of its charm, because when one is lost, one may discover a convent or a palace or an hotel. The air in the barrio is perfumed by jasmine flowers and the orange trees that one finds there. Many of the palaces have wrought iron gates that allow one to peep into their beautiful patios. There are many small stores and some artisan shops, as well as good art galleries, which make this area very interesting. Barrio Santa Cruz originated as Seville’s old Jewish Quarter. Once Saint King Ferdinand III conquered the city, one of the largest Jewish communities in Spain came to Seville, second only to that of Toledo. After the expulsion of the Jews in 1483, the Jewish Quarter that extended over what today is Barrio Santa Cruz and San Bartolomé went into decline. The streets of Barrio Santa Cruz wind into an enchanting labyrinth, they are narrow and deep to keep out the burning sun of Sevillian summers and create currents of fresh air that relieve high temperatures and make any visit pleasurable. The courtyards, shaded and intimate, lush in plants and flowers, wrap us in their peace and freshness. At the beginning of the last century the decision was made to redevelop Barrio Santa Cruz, under the auspices of the first Regal Commissioner of Tourism, the Marquis de Valle Inclán. You will be able to appreciate the georgeous results before your very eyes. Sevilla was once the home to the Ritva and Abravanel families amongst others.

Following your busy morning, you will no doubt have worked up a great appetite and we have many suggestions for wonderful restaurants. The choice is entirely yours and we will await your instructions. We very much look forward to showing you Seville on this memorable tour!
