Spanish Wine DO Ribeiro which is situated in the south of Galicia and to the east of the Rías Baixas DO, features a warmer climate than its coastal neighbour and not as much rain. Its vineyards are to the north and south of the main river, the picturesque Miño. Ribadavia, crowned by the 14th century Gothic Santo Domingo church, is the main town in the area.
Most of the vineyards of Spanish Wine DO Ribeiro are planted on terraces along the river valleys and the vines are increasingly trained on modern trellis systems rather than on the traditional Galician-style pergola.
In the Ribeiro Wine Region of Spain white wines dominate and the fruity, aromatic Treixadura is the main grape produced, sometimes used with a touch of Albariño, Godello, Torrontés or Loureira to enhance the blends. The wines can reach 13˚C, but they have good balancing acidity making them an ideal match for food.
Although Spanish Wine DO Ribeiro has been slow to appear on the international market, in recent years due to quality enhancement and experimentation with red grape varieties, its reputation has increased.
