Congratulations to all our wonderful Michelin Star Chefs in Spain and Portugal !

The kitchens in Spain and Portugal are heating up as next week the 2019 Michelin Guide to Spain & Portugal will be presented, and for the first time in history, LIVE from Lisbon, Portugal!

Over the last nine years, Madrid, San Sebastian, Barcelona, Bilbao, Marbella, Santiago de Compostela, Gerona and Tenerife have all played host to the prestigious Michelin Guide to Spain and Portugal gala. But, this year, for the first ever, the gala will be held in Lisbon.

This year’s gala meal will be prepared by Lisbon’s seven Michelin-star chefs.  José Avillez, head of Michelin 2* Belcanto in Lisbon will coordinate the meal and be joined by Michelin 1* Lisbon Restaurant Chefs Henrique Sá Pessoa from Alma, Joachim Koerper from Eleven, João Rodrigues from Feitoria,  Alexandre Silva from Loco, Miguel Rocha Vieira from Fortaleza do Guincho (in Cascais) and Spanish chef Sergi Arola from Lab by Sergi Arola in Sintra.

Curiously, Portugal holds no Michelin 3 starred restaurant to date and actually holds very few Michelin stars compared with its Iberian cousin Spain who currently boasts 11 Michelin 3 starred restaurants (although 1 has recently closed!).

Could Portugal hosting the NEW Michelin Restaurant Guide mean we will be seeing the 1st Michelin 3* Restaurant in Portugal for the 2019 Michelin Guide to Spain & Portugal?????? We’ll let you know next week …

There are currently 30 Michelin 2* Restaurants in Spain and Portugal 2018 … only 5 of which are Michelin 2* Restaurants in Portugal:  Belcanto (Lisbon), Ocean (Porches, Algarve), Vila Joya (Albufeira, Algarve), Il Gallo d’Oro, (Funchal) and TheYeatman (Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto).

Could one (or more) of Portugal’s Michelin 2* Restaurants be gaining that 3rd Michelin star  for the 2019 Michelin Guide to Spain & Portugal to finally give  Portugal  a Michelin Three Starred Restaurant? We’ll let you know next week …

There are currently 177 Michelin 1* Restaurants Spain and Portugal 2018 … of which, only 18 are in Portugal.

Hopes are high for a star studded night for both Spain and Portugal next week and for some surprises for the great Portuguese chefs to take the current 23 Michelin Starred Restaurants to an even greater number.

We’ll keep you updated on all the results next Wednesday 21st of November 2018, in the meantime happy dining :-)

In the meantime here’s a LINK to the COMPLETE full list of all CURRENT Michelin Starred Restaurants in Spain and Portugal

Good luck chefs !!!!!!

Michelin 2016 Spain & Portugal RESULTS ARE IN

The yearlong wait is over –  The NEW MICHELIN Guide Spain and Portugal 2016 was officially presented earlier this evening LIVE from Galicia. So ……  what’s new? What’s HOT ? (What’s NOT?) Here’s the lowdown from Santiago de Compostela:

This year just 16 NEW Michelin Stars were awarded to Spain!

* * *  NO  NEW Michelin 3 Star Restaurant in Spain 2016 * * *

We were rooting for Mugaritz and ABaC to be promoted to the Michelin 3 Star elite status but unfortunately for another year it is just not to be! So, no new Michelin 3 star restaurants in Spain will appear in the New Michelin Guide to Spain and Portugal for 2016.

However, all eight of last year’s Michelin 3 Star Restaurants in Spain retained their magnificent status to head the list of the “crème de la crème” for another year!

And, here’s the FULL COMPLETE LIST of MICHELIN STARRED RESTAURANTS in SPAIN and PORTUGAL 2016

Michelin Date for your diary!!!  The Michelin Guide to Spain & Portugal 2016 will be presented on November 25th 2015 from Santiago de Compostela in Spain.  Here’s a recap of what happened last year in Portugal:

For 2015, the Michelin Guide to Spain & Portugal added two new Michelin starred restaurants in Portugal to the distinguished list of gastronomic excellence, and promoted another to Michelin two-star status.

For 2015, the “Belcanto” in Lisbon, from the popular chef José Avillez, was promoted to Michelin 2 Star Restaurant status.

Curiously Belcanto is the first restaurant in Lisbon to be distinguished with two Michelin stars and José Avillez is the first Portuguese chef to obtain this honor in Portugal.

New on the Michelin Restaurant list for 2015 is Pedro Lemos, Executive Chef for his namesake restaurant in the Foz do Douro area of Porto, and, São Gabriel in Almancil, Algarve, by Chef Leonel Pereira, regained its Michelin star after a one-year absence.

In total Portugal currently holds 17 Michelin stars by 14 chefs, spread all across the country.

It will be great to see some more Michelin Stars shining in Portugal for 2016 so good luck chefs :-)

Will one, or more, of Barcelona city’s Michelin 2 star restaurants achieve Michelin 3 star status so that the city can finally boast a Tri-Star Michelin Restaurant?

Is Angel León on a roll to keep climbing and achieve another Michelin star for 2016?

All will be revealed on November 25th 2015 when the Michelin Guide Spain & Portugal 2016 will be officially presented – from here at Gourmand Breaks we’ll keep you informed :-)

Aponiente –  Angel León in El Puerto de Santa Maria, Cádiz

 *  19 NEW Michelin 1 Star Restaurants in Spain 2015 *

Mugaritz !!!  A regular deception in the Michelin Guide for Spain over recent years! Every year we all hope that the great 2 Michelin starred Basque restaurant, Mugaritz, will be promoted (after all it has been a World Top 10 restaurant since 2006 and is currently rated 6th Best Restaurant in the World by Restaurant Magazine).  No exception this year! Mugaritz restaurant did not receive a well deserved 3rd Michelin star.

Barcelona city, yet again,  fails to receive that 3rd Michelin star, to be able to boast about a TriStar restaurant.  However, the city does maintain its fabulous four Michelin 2 star restaurants: ABaC (Jordi Cruz), Enoteca (Paco Pérez), Lasarte (Martín Berasategui) and Moments (Raül Balam), and numerous Michelin 1 star restaurants.

Congratulations to our wonderful Spanish Michelin Star Chefs!
