2021 Michelin Stars Spain & Portugal – see full list below

The Michelin Guide 2021 was presented last night in Madrid, in a virtual gala broadcast from the Royal Post Office. It has been a horrible year for the hospitality industry, but Michelin still has released its guide as a gesture of tribute and support to the sector. This time Michelin wanted to highlight the effort of their inspectors who carried out their work in a year with so many restaurants closed and numerous restrictions. In fact, on the pages of the guide, next to the name of some establishments, a phrase appears: «Temporarily closed by Covid». It is not known how many of them will manage to reopen next year, but rest assured that our private gourmet tours will take you to the best ones, of course all of them being Covid-safe.

2021 Michelin Stars Spain & Portugal – no new 3 Michelin stars in Spain nor Portugal

There have not been any new Michelin three stars, so the eleven that already had them since last year remain: Akelarre, Arzak, Azurmendi and Martín Berasategui in the Basque Country, Abac, Lasarte and El Celler de Can Roca in Catalonia, Diverxo in Madrid, Quique Dacosta in the Valencian Community, Aponiente in Andalusia, and Cenador de Amós in Cantabria. Sadly Covid restrictions took their toll on Zalacain, the first ever 3 Michelin stars restaurant in Spain, now closed.

2021 Michelin Stars Spain & Portugal  –  three new Michelin 2 star restaurants in Spain

The most significant turn of events last night is that three Spanish restaurants go from one up to two stars.

One is the Galician Culler de Pau, from O Grove (Pontevedra), where Javier Olleros has offered excellent cuisine for years, with a  personal touch and totally committed to the environment and local producers. The other two are in Catalonia: these are Cinc Sentits, one of the most interesting restaurants in Barcelona at the moment, with Jordi Artal at the helm, and Bo.Tic, in Corca, Gerona. In all three cases, as in many of those who achieve a star, the guide focuses on young chefs, perfectly trained, who value local or proximity products. There are no newly crowned Michelin two star restaurants in Portugal this year.

2021 Michelin Stars Spain & Portugal  –  15 new  Michelin 1 stars in Spain & 2 in Portugal

Congratulations are in order for Ljubomir Stanisic for his fantastical cuisine at 100 Maneiras. Stanisic’s menu called “The Story” traces his journey from being a teenage refugee leaving war-torn Yugoslavia to a master of the Portuguese kitchen. His cosy restaurant is a steady favourite of many of our clients, and always recommended!

The 51 – 100 World’s Best Restaurants List 2018 has already been revealed (Full List HERE) and this just leaves us hungry (pun intended :-)) to know who are the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2018 !

What we do know is that there are 7 restaurants from Spain and Portugal in the NEW 51-100 list of the Worlds Best Restaurants 2018:

Nerua at No.57, Quique Dacosta at No.68, Martín Berasategui at No.76 and Belcanto at No.75 all staying in the 51-100 list from last year. DiverXO re-enters in 96th place after disappearing from last years list and Elkano and Enigma are 2 NEW ENTRIES for Spain in 77th and 95th place respectively.

The World’s 50 Best Restaurants List 2018 1 – 50 will be announced LIVE from Bilbao on June 19th, but, what can we expect next week ? A new World’s Number One Restaurant? and what about the 7 Spanish Restaurants that were in last years list that we have no news of, just yet:

EL CELLER DE CAN ROCA – Girona, Spain: Currently at  No. 3! 3 Brothers, 3 Michelin Stars, 3 Repsol Suns and the World’s Nº3 Restaurant (for 2017)! Since 2011 El Celler de Can Roca has been in the TOP 3 of the prestigious World’s 50 Best Restautants List ultimately being voted the World’s Number One Restaurant in 2015, and 2013. Another Top 3 year for the 3 Roca Brothers?

ASADOR ETXEBARRI – Axpe, Spain: Currently at No. 6 and in 2016 were placed at  Nº10. Probably the best BBQ in the World has climbed higher in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants List every year since 2013! Can Asador Etxebarri  climb further up the list again this year?

MUGARITZ – San Sebastian, Spain: Currently at No. 9 after slightly falling from 7th place in 2016. Mugaritz has been considered one of the World’s best 50 restaurants since 2006 by the prestigious Restaurant Magazine where it entered in 10th place!  Since then it has always appeared in the Top 10 with it’s highest placing being in 3rd place in 2011 and 2012. A Top 10 place again for Mugaritz this year?

TICKETS – Barcelona, Spain: Currently at No. 25 after climbing from Nº 29 in 2016. Actually Tickets has always climbed up the Restaurant Magazine’s prestigious World’s Best Restaurants List from Nº 77 in 2013 to nº 57 in 2014 to  Nº 42 in 2015 to Nº 29 in 2016 and currently (2017) to Nº 25. Another year climbing the prestigious list for Tickets?

ARZAK – San Sebastian, Spain: Currently at No. 30  falling from Nº21 in 2016. Arzak has constantly featured in the acclaimed Restaurant Magazine World’s Best 50 restaurants list, but surprisingly in 2015, after being in the Top 10  since 2006, Arzak fell to No 17! Hopefully 2018 will see Arzak climbing up the charts again.

AZURMENDI – Larrabetzu, Spain: Currently at No. 38 after quite a big fall from Nº16 in 2016.  Azurmendi was a NEW ENTRY at Nº26 in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Awards 2014,   then in 2015 rose to 19th place. Hopefully last years fall is just a short setback for Azurmendi and they climb back up the list again this year.

DISFRUTAR – Barcelona, Spain: Currently at No.55 … well, not theoretically Disfrutar’s current position as the Worlds 55th Best Restaurant 2018 has already been awarded to DON JULIO – Buenos Aires, Argentina, so can we expect to see them in the Top 50 for 2018? Disfrutar  was a NEW ENTRY in 2017 and was also the Miele One To Watch Award 2017 winner, so we’re watching for a Top 50 place this year for Disfrutar “To Enjoy”!

Congratulations to all the wonderful Chefs in the 51 – 100 World’s Best Restaurants List 2018 and good luck to all the Chefs anticipating the much awaited 1 – 50 World’s Best Restaurants List 2018 presentation next week.

We’ll bring you the results of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2018 1-50

The Michelin roadshow is in full swing and some of the Michelin Guides 2018 have already been presented: Great Britain & Ireland, Shanghai, Switzerland, San Francisco and Washington DC. Still to come this October are Chicago and New York  … but Spain & Portugal don’t have long to wait as Michelin fever lands on Spain & Portugal on November 22nd 2017!

Can Spain expect another Michelin 3* restaurant for 2018 ??? Maybe the Michelin Guide Spain & Portugal 2018 will provide Portugal with its first Michelin 3* restaurant ???  We’ll keep you posted …

This year the Michelin Guide Spain & Portugal travels to the Canary Islands, to Tenerife – the only Canary Island with Michelin-starred restaurants, of which there are just four:

  • Michelin 2* Restaurant: M.B. by Martín Berasategui (Guia de Isora)
  • Michelin 1* Restaurant: El Rincón de Juan Carlos (Los Gigantes)
  • Michelin 1* Restaurant: Abama Kabuki (Guia de Isora)
  • Michelin 1* Restaurant: Kazan (Santa Cruz de Tenerife)

The official announcement of the Michelin Guide to Spain & Portugal 2018 will come from a decadent gala hosted at the Ritz-Carlton Abama Hotel in Guía de Isora, home to two of the island’s Michelin-starred restaurants.

M.B restaurant’s Executive Chef, Erlantz Gorostiza, heads up the « catering » side of the event, supported by Martín Berasategui (founder of M.B) and Ricardo Sanz of the cult Japanese fusion restaurant Kabuki. Guests will have the chance to try the delights of all four Michelin starred restaurants of Tenerife.

In the meantime, while we wait for the NEW Michelin Guide Spain & Portugal 2018 to be announced, here’s a quick recap of last years’ Michelin occurrences:

A whopping 30 new Michelin stars were awarded for the Michelin Guide to Spain & Portugal 2017 with Martín Berasategui finally getting the 3rd Michelin star for Barcelona city with his restaurant Lasarte.

In total, last year, Spain received 1 New Michelin 3*restaurant, 5 new Michelin 2* and 15 new Michelin 1* while Portugal received 2 new Michelin 2* restaurants and 7 new Michelin 1*.
